Gig review: Iron Chic at Brudenell Social Club, Leeds

Iron Chic kicked off a small run of UK shows at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds.

Appearing on stage earlier than the previously suggested time due to Apologies, I Have None suffering a few technical difficulties, therefore arriving late at the venue, Iron Chic swapped their spot and took advantage of a positively charged crowd.

Starting early with possibly their most popular song ‘Cutesy Monster Man’ is always a dangerous yet gutsy move, it starts the show great but can cause the atmosphere to fizzle out. However, this was not the case. Heading straight in to My Best Friend (Is A Nihilist) the pop punk heavyweights showed no signs of slowing down.

Iron Chic aren’t a band that seem to interact with the crowd as often as some others, vocalist Jason Lubrano pauses very little between songs, maybe to grab a quick drink or mention the next song title, the crowd didn’t seem to mind though, everyone was having a great time, crowd surfing, singing the lyrics back as loud as they could. Who needs to talk when you can sing?

The dark yet sometimes quite positive lyrics are a constant for the band, tackling a lot of life’s pressures, death, love, anxiety and depression to name a few. These were highlighted throughout the set with songs like You Can’t Stay Safe and A Headache With Pictures. Adding big powerful singalong choruses brings the crowd together and gives the night a sense of fellowship that warmed the heart.

The atmosphere was electric throughout and the crowd enjoyed every single minute of it. They only have a few dates in the UK before heading into Europe and back to the USA, so I highly recommend you try catch them at an upcoming show.
