This is what you need to know about The Vampire Diaries, how to watch it and if there will be a ninth season.

What is The Vampire Diaries about?

The series is largely based on the novels of the same name, written by L.J. Smith, and is based in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia

Two vampire brothers, Damon and Stefan Salvadore, fall in love with the same woman, Katherine Pierce.

In a battle for her love, their hatred for one another grows.

That is, until Katherine’s present day doppelganger Elena Gilbert sparks an influx of past emotions and insight into the brothers’ relationship.

The series follows the life of 17-year-old Elena as she attempts to navigate the supernatural lives of Damon and Stefan, while finding friends and foes in unlikely characters - such as werewolves, vampires, witches and doppelgangers.

How successful was The Vampire Diaries?

The show premiered on The CW Television Network in the US in September 2009 with 5.7 millions viewers and it soon became a huge success.

At the time, it received the most viewers of any show which had featured on the network since the channel launched in 2006.

The initial success proved the show had a captivated audience and CW extended the season to include 22 episodes.

The premier season averaged at 3.3 million viewers per episode.

Since then, The Vampire Diaries has had a further seven seasons before coming to an end in 2017.

The show and its actors have won a string of awards - including seven awards at the Teens Choice Awards in 2010.

Nina Dobrev - who plays Elena - won Favorite TV Drama Actress 2012 at the People’s Choice Awards and Ian Somerhalder - playing Damon - won Best Sci Fi/Fantasy Actor at the same awards in 2014.

Why was it deleted from Netflix?

The Vampire Diaries disappeared from Netflix in November 2020, to the dismay of loyal fans and first-time viewers.

The streaming platform’s licence for the show came to an end and was not renewed. It is thought this could have been because owners of CW, WarnerMedia decided they wanted it to be an exclusive feature on their streaming site, HBO Max.

However, on 1 February the show made a return to Netflix, much to the delight of TVD fans.

Will there be a ninth season?

Despite rumours that there will be a return of the Salvador men in 2021, nothing has been officially announced.

It has been reported that a ninth season will be released in March, but CW and Netflix have not confirmed or denied these speculations.

There has also been no confirmation as to whether HBO Max will be the only platform to air the season, or if it will be available on Netflix also.
