Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre re-opens with films and streamings from late August - what's on and how to book

The world famous theatre is also aiming to announce a programme of live theatre for later in the year shortly.

The venue has introduced a comprehensive programme of measures for the safety and comfort of cinema patrons, including limited capacities and aisle access for every pair of seats booked.

It has been awarded the VisitEngland ‘We’re Good to Go’ industry standard mark, signifying that it adheres to government and public health guidance.

Artistic director Paul Robinson says: “We’re all absolutely thrilled to be able to welcome audiences back into the building after our enforced break, and we’re working hard to ensure everyone feels safe and comfortable in the cinema environment.

“We’ll be announcing further screenings for September very soon, and are also working hard to programme an innovative and exciting programme of live theatre for later this year – watch this space.”

Films/streamings from August onwards will initially be screened on Thursdays to Saturdays, then (with a few exceptions) Tuesdays to Saturdays from early September

Flash Gordon – 40th anniversary (film): A remastered version of the 1980 film with a great soundtrack from Queen. Sam J Jones stars as Flash, with Melody Anderson as Dale Arden, Max von Sydow as Ming The Merciless and (of course!) Brian Blessed as Prince Vultan.

Thursday August 20 at 7pm; Saturday August 22 at 2pm

Emma (film): Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Jane Austen’s much-loved heroine, with Johnny Flynn as Mr Knightley, Miranda Hart as Miss Bates and Bill Nighy as Mr Woodhouse.

Friday August 21, Saturday August 22 and Thursday August 27 at 7pm

Military Wives (film): Kristin Scott-Thomas, Sharon Horgan and Jason Flemyng in a film inspired by the true story of the Military Wives Choir.

Friday August 28 at 7pm; Saturday August 29 at 2pm

West End Musical Season – 42nd Street (captured live): With a score including We're in the Money and Lullaby of Broadway, 42nd Street tells the story of a theatre director trying to mount a musical extravaganza at the height of the Great Depression.

Saturday August 29 at 7pm

Dates for September films and screenings will be announced soon, and will include ‘captured live’ West End musicals Kinky Boots and The King and I; Andre Rieu’s Magical Maastricht – Together in Music and Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes (all captured live); and new British movies Summerland.

Also coming soon is The Secret Garden, some of which was filmed in the Walled Garden at Helmsley, and Michael Ball and Alfie Boe: Back Together.
