In the summer of 1985, Los Angeles was gripped by fear.

Over a course of several months Richard Ramirez invaded homes in the Greater Los Angeles area carrying out an array of violent attacks.

The Night Stalker, as he was known by the press prior to his arrest, left a trail of victims of varying age, gender and ethnicity, baffling investigators.

The crimes of Ramirez and the investigation which led to his capture are the subject of Netflix documentary Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer.

How many victims did Richard Ramirez have?

Richard Ramirez was convicted of 13 counts of murders, 5 counts of attempted murder, 11 counts of sexual assault and 14 counts of burglary.

Ramirez was also charged with the murder of Patty Elaine Higgins but was not charged due to a lack of physical evidence linking him to the crime.

In 2009 Ramirez was linked to the murder of a 9-year-old girl in San Francisco, which took place in April 1984.

-Dale Okazasi, 34, shot to death in Rosemead, March 17, 1985.

-Tsai-Lian Yu, 30, shot to death in Monterey Park, March 17, 1985.

- Maxine Zazzara, 44, stabbed to death in Whittier, March 27, 1985.

-William Doi, 65, shot to death in Monterey Park, May 14, 1985.

Ramirez has also been linked to the rape and murder of nine-year-old Mei Leung on April 10, 1984 in San Francisco, and Patty Elaine Higgins, 32, on June 27, 1985 in Arcadia.

How did he die?

Following his conviction in 1989 Richard Ramirez was placed on death row but he was never executed.

One June 7, 2013, he died aged 53 of B-cell lymphoma. Ramirez was aged 24 when he was arrested.

Who was he married to?

Ramirez began receiving letters from Doreen Lioy, a magazine editor, in 1985 following his conviction.

Ramirez proposed to Lioy three years later and the pair married in 1996 at San Quentin Prison in California.

Lioy reportedly left Ramirez in 2009 after he was linked to the rape and murder of nine-year-old Mei Leung. The pair remained married until Ramirez’ death in 2013.
