Harrogate's Yorkshire Tea vs PG Tips: Battle of the Brews to air on Channel 5

Harrogate-based Yorkshire Tea is to battle it out in a new television show to find out the UK’s favourite brew.

Yorkshire Tea vs PG Tips: Battle of the Brews is on Channel 5 at 7pm on Sunday.

The show feature’s Britain’s leading producers of tea – “the traditional favourite against the new interloper that topped the tea sales charts for the first time ever in 2019, selling £103 million against PG’s £96.8 million,” said the broadcaster.

The show will delve into tea’s history, including classic adverts starring Sean Bean, Jonny Vegas, a troop of chimpanzees and a knitted monkey.

The two brands go head to head in a series of categories that look at issues like as sales, heritage and innovation.

Along the way the show take in tea’s fascinating history – including the surprising story behind the invention of the tea bag - and looks at some of the classic adverts these they have produced, starring Sean Bean, Johnny Vegas, a troop of chimpanzees and a knitted monkey.

Other patrons of Yorkshire Tea include athletes the Brownlee brothers.

There will also be a blind taste tests which show how difficult it is to recognise what people are convinced is their favourite tea, a look at the shape of tea bags, a guide to making the perfect cup, a critique of dunking biscuits and a quest to see if aficionados of particular brands can be tempted to love their competitors.
