The Labour Party has held onto power at Leeds City Council, taking a small handful of seats from the Tories in yesterday’s local elections (May 2).

Counting has been underway at the John Charles Centre for Sport in Middleton since this morning - and finally concluded shortly before 5pm as the last result was declared.

After slightly more than a third of people in the city turned out, the picture in Leeds reflected the national trend - with Labour making gains and holding on to most of their incumbent councillors.

But there was good news for the Green Party too, which almost doubled its number of councillors on the authority after snatching three seats from Labour members.

One of the big names to lose out was Labour Coun Al Garthwaite who, for the last year, has served as the Lord Mayor of Leeds. She has represented the Headingley and Hyde Park ward for the last eight years - but had it taken from her by newly elected Green Coun Tim Goodall.

Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party saw its total number of sitting councillors rise to three - all of whom represent the Middleton Park ward. It came after newly elected Coun Rob Chesterfield beat former Labour Coun Sharon Burke in a tightly fought race.

In total, the Labour Party held onto 15 of its seats that were being contested - and gained an extra four (taking three from the Conservatives and one from the Green Party’s former Coun David Blackburn in the Farnley and Wortley ward).

The Conservatives held onto five seats of its seats that were being contested - while the Liberal Democrats kept their two seats that were being contested.

Simultaneously, the Morley Borough Independents held onto both of their seats that were up for grabs, while the Garforth and Swillington Independents held onto their seat in the Garforth and Swillington ward that was being contested.

The overall turnout was 34.24%
