I was impressed with D
ougie Freedman and hoped that we could keep him for another year. He reminded me of Bobby Collins. His contribution coming when it did was invaluable. Gary Mac should seek to get him back and make him captain for the new season, with a brief to help bring on the younger players.

Andy Cole ?
I'd rather have George Cole
He's an has been journeyman looking to bolster his pension fund.
Keep away Cole. Lets have some promising young hungry talent.
Mark Sutcliffe****
I am a long time Leeds fan I would say yes to Phillips but no to Cole and bring back Fredman and keep Elding if we don`t get Riordan
****
We all know that finesse is needed in the Premiership but for a striker to succeed in Div 1 he needs to bull his way through a defense. Andy Cole has lost his cutting edge and a yard or two of pace but that doesn't mean that he isn't good enough for this Division. If Mac thinks he is then thats good enough for me. If/when we go up then its time to build a cultured side to take us back to the Premiership and keep us there. Untill then I want to see players who will kick fight and scream to get us up no matter how old or ugly they are.

I am not sure about Andy Cole as the answer, But remember last time Leeds were in the lower divisions for a while that Man Howard Wilkinson (who signed and coached Gary Mac) signed a so called over the hill ex reds player called Gordon Strachan and an over the hill goal keeper in Mervin Day. Within three years we had won the league Championship title. So I do believe a good blend of experience and youth is what is required, but it all comes down to the manager motivating both the youth and experienced alike. How good are you Gary?

When we in limbo this time last year, we were going to give youth a chance with the likes of Tom Elliott, Fabian Delph, Scott Gardner, Tomi Ameobi etc.
but that never materialised. Surely at some point over the course of last season one or two of these lads, if not all of them, deserved their chance of first team league action. Now we are talking of signing Andy Cole, possibly a short term means to an end, i.e. promotion. No doubt Cole will be looking for a large deal for what will be his swansong.

I cannot believe how negative people are being, Gary Mac is clearly looking for other strikers too, midfielders, and defenders. We need to improve everywhere, and Cole would obviously be used as an impact player. Dougie Freedman has about 20% of the class of Cole and look what he did for us at the end of last season. We presently have strikers at league One Standard who think 4 and five times before shooting at goals, Cole would give us a cutting edge, and teach something to our younger strikers. I definitely think we need to go for a some young talent this summer but dont pass up someone like Cole.
Thanks

Hi
No, Leeds shouldn't sign Andy Cole. The club need at least two strikers in the squad who will score around 20 goals in a season to have a strong chance of promotion. I'd like to see the club focus on youth and youth development, with an odd gem of an older experienced player that can guide the rest of the team, provide the experience required, but who is good enough to fully contribute in their own position. Andy Cole would not fulfil these criteria, though I believe Kevin Philips would. Whilst the club needs to be ambitious to succeed, it also needs to be sensible and live within its means, so I appeal to the board and management team to take a long term view and really look to develop our own talent. It will take time and will still require selective, good signings but it will be the best way forward for the club and the fans in the long run. You can't beat cheering on home grown talent.

Andy Cole is much to old, lets get younger players
Warren****
Riorden and Maynard Please if we can have Cole as well as then ok but the younger ones first!!!
need to invest in a right back, left back and a right winger maybe the lad who was on loan from Bristol City who ripped us apart every time he got the ball when Tranmere beat us at elland road and he scored!!!!Looked good!
Stephen Carr right back!!! unknown who we can get for right back maybe the baldy from Donny!

I can't believe how negative fellow LUFC fans are being. Did nobody notice how Dougie Freedman galvanised our play off push with his goals, assists and overall link up play? Cole would be an excellent signing for Leeds. He has superb experience and proved at Manchester City that he has far more to his game than simply being the poacher he once was at Man Utd and Newcastle. In order to get promotion, we need a mix of youth, flair and experience and the likes of Cole would go a long way towards achieving this.
I would add that more than one striker is needed since Freedman has gone, Elding is going and Kandol is not good enough. A signing such as Nicky Maynard, Joe Garner or Aaron Mclean along with Cole or Phillips would be ideal and would challenge Beckford to produce on a more regular basis.

I don't recall Swansea, Forest or Doncaster needing an old has been up front to give them the experience necessary to get promoted. I've barely heard of any of any of their players, it's management, coaching and motivation that get teams promoted. Come on Macca, prove yourself.
Kind regards
Simon Martin****
No thanks, too old & is only in it for the money. I'd like to see Dougie Freedman back
Christine Duval****
Kevin Phillips Yes, Andy Cole No !
Save money on his extravagant wages and put it towards a fee for Maynard ( Crewe ) or Garner ( Carlisle ) or someone with talent on the way up not on the way out.
Phillips was 2nd top scorer in the Championship last season when did Cole last produce ?
Chris B.****
Have to agree with the people who suggest that the money should be spent on younger, hungry players. I would not want to see him at Leeds, trying for one last pay day. He is too old, too injury prone and probably not the sort of influence we want at the moment. This is nothing to do with who he has played for in the past, there are just so many better options. Phillips I like, but definitely no to Cole, Andrew.
John****
Signing Andy Cole is a bit mistake just look at Flo last season, what a waste. We could have had someone from the youth or reserve strikers who should of played instead of Flo and given them more experience and could of scored 6 or 7 goals that could of put us into second place.
Andrew Gadsby****
Mac, our new Leeds manager - I trust is 'building' for the future, and does not require to 'look backwards' (to the likes of Cole) to achieve that. Firstly ensure that the Leeds young guns (and those coming through the ranks - that are perceived to deliver) are tied down - then look to see where (within in the team's developing playing style) an astute (not old) 'buy' can ensure promotion this time. To get to the play-off's, and sadly fail on two occasions breaks my heart. Now Mac: build for that future - now just for tomorrow!
From a proud and expectant Leeds follower.
Regards
Mick****
I'd be a little sceptical that Andy Cole would be sufficiently motivated at this stage of his career – particularly given that he's going to be on a much lower salary than what he has been used to in the Premier League. It's a balancing act between building for the future with good young players, versus a need for older experienced heads to channel their exuberance & raw talent.
Gary Mac has to make that call; and I'll go with him.
Gary Maltby****
Andy Cole in his prime needed 5 good chances to score 1 goal. At Newcastle, under Kevin Keegan, he got that but even Keegan knew what he was doing when he sold him to Manchester Utd for a nice healthy profit.
Cole is playing out his last few years picking up big money with little or no return on the investment. Why have Sunderland released him?
Gary Mac would be well advised to leave well alone. Far better to take gamble on a younger player with something to prove, like Stuart Fleetwood (Forest Green).
Clive (Andover)****
Andy Cole? no thanks, worst England forward ever. If this is Macca's level then get Macca out now (i'm having doubts about him anyway after his comments on how well the team did in the play off final when all the fans know the team were totally spineless and lacked bottle).
David, Miggy, Leeds****
Absolutely not, injury prone ex-red on big wages! Have we learned nothing from the past?
Jimmy****
100% No
Peter****
Don't go there! he will be the highest paid player (or he wont come) and will spend most of the season injured. I am sure there are better alternatives out there. We should be awash with money after the support of last season so why are we chasing all the freebies?
Neil****
Bad, Bad, Bad signing – Cole is a money man, if we could turn the clock back 10 years then he would have been a great buy. I honestly can't believe that Macca would want to sign Cole, he won't get us the goals that are needed and unlike Freedman his heart is no longer in the game. We need a player who hasn't done it all and has the heart and legs to score vital goals.
Alastair****
Kevin Phillips; Andy Cole... why stop there? Let's go older! Dean Windass... Teddy Sheringham... Bob Latchford...
Bring Tomi Ameobi through instead - it's amazing what a loan period at Scunny can do...
(7 away games a year, seeing as you're asking, and I wish I hadn't gone to the playoff final...)
Tony W, London exile ****
i would not risk cole . a bad start would get the anti you know who mob on his back and would cost the clubs moral. go for freedman or and phillips.
simon****
Let's hope he signs for us. We could do with an international left back. I wonder if he'll bring his wife, Cheryl with him? I do hope so!
Adrian Mace****
We would be better off going for Darren Huckerby, 32 released from Norwich CIty.
The bright lights of LUFC must be better than USA or Celtic. He was not given the full credit when he last worn the shirt, but fitting 6-7 strikers into a team always proves difficult.
Percy Vear****
i like the idea the macca is trying to get someone with experience to play alongside Beckford.
Cole or Phillips would both be good signings and would add alot more quality upfront.
margaret****
Signing Cole would be a bad move for loads of reasons. He's been very injury prone for the last 2 years and I understand he's not great in the dressing room. Also, his Manchester connections would mean he wouldn't be welcomed with open arms and if he didn't get off to a flying start the crowd would be after him. We need a youthful, hungry, pacey forward. Not a sulking, old has been with lots of red baggage.
Gary – don't do it and hopefully is a load of tosh. He'd get clattered about in League One and is a little fragile I think. Say 'no' to Cole!
Jamie Taylor ****
HE'S OVER THE HILL SPEND HIS WAGES ON SOMEONE YOUNGER
Stephen****
Lining up old has been is a bad way to set out our stall, we need young fresh faces who still want to succeed and not turn up for the money, we had that lot in the championship and look what happened.
Bad move Gary!!
Andy****
I would be willing to take any striker that can score goals in this division. Who cares what team he played for? Let's not forget its League one we are in not the premiership. Look at the impact Freedman had on Leeds. Who's to say the Cole would not have the same effect. Or are the narrow minded, go to one game a year (play off final) fans still hoping that Leeds will put a late bid in for Ronaldinho.
Kevin Lyons****
This would have been a great signing 15 years ago but unfortunately time travel isn't possible. This would be a terrible signing in my opinion, we need young hungry players who will fight for Leeds United. Not a worn out journeyman who will bleed the club dry whilst sitting in the physios room for weeks on end. It would be worth coughing up the extra cash for someone like Riordan from Celtic or Maynard from Crewe, players who want to achieve things in the game. Not players who have done it all before and are packing in a few more pay packets before they hang up their boots.
Chris Hicken****
Cole will be 37 in October and he has admitted that this will probably be his last season in football, it is clear that McAllister wants an experienced striker to help us out of this division, however I'm not sure signing players in their mid-30's is the answer, do we really want another Tore Andre Flo or Alan Thompson situation where we have an experienced player on big wages in the treatment room for half the season, when we could have a top, young and hungry league one player eager to prove his worth and help get us promoted - there are plenty of these guys in league one, Maynard ar Crewe, Garner at Carlisle, Lambert at Bristol and Gillespie at Cheltenham to name a few - I think our money would be better spent on one of these guys as opposed to a journeyman striker at the end of their career, I dont think these veterans have the stomach or the legs for a full season in League One and there isn't exactly any financial incentive for them to do well either - I don't buy into this whole "needing experience" business, to get out of league one you need players who are hungry and determined and that fight until the final minute, personally this can't be achieved with ageing players who are seeing out their last days.
