The RAIN wasn’t enough to put off thousands of runners at a gruelling charity race at Harewood House today.

Around 2,000 people got in the running for Age UK and dashed around the grounds of the historic house, with the sunshine coming out just in time to see them over the finish line.

The YEP-backed race aims to raise £65,000 to help support vulnerable older people across Leeds and the rest of the UK.

Being cheered across the finish line in first place with a time of 34 minutes and 54 seconds was Frank Beresford, who recently left the French Foreign Legion after five years of service.

Speaking to the YEP, the 24-year-old from Otley said: “It was good – a really enjoyable course.”

The first woman across the finish line was Charlie Wills, 34, from Roundhay, who had an impressive time of 40 minutes and 33 seconds.

She said: “I normally do 5k runs but I haven’t done a 10k in about five years so it’s a nice surprise to be the first woman to finish the race.

“It went much quicker than I thought but it was difficult because it’s a cross-country run with massive hills to tackle.”

A family-friendly 2k event was also held for young fundraisers, along with face painting and entertainment including a bouncy castle .

Lydia Curran, head of events at Age UK, said: “The atmosphere has been brilliant.

“We had a little bit of rain but that wasn’t enough to put people off.

“We believe that no-one should have no-one and money raised from this event will help make sure people who feel lonely will have someone to turn to.”
