Hull City may have lost out on their top transfer target in Fraizer Campbell, but bustling hitman Daniel Cousin is the perfect big-game replacement.
That's the verdict of Tigers boss Phil Brown following the Gabonese forward's arrival on Monday in a £1.5m deal – half his reported £3m release clause – with the Glasgow Rangers striker finally granted his wish to play in the Premiership.

With 35
"cup finals" to go for City in their maiden adventure in the Premiership, Brown admits he will be relying on the big-match experience of players like powerhouse attacker Cousin, who signed off his Gers career in the cauldron of an Old Firm derby.

The 31-year-old opened the scoring in the Gers' 4-2 victory over bitter rivals Celtic with a majestic solo effort.

Cousin caused the Hoops defence all sorts of problems throughout the game, although the gloss of signing off on a winning note for the Ibrox club was marred late on by virtue of his sending-off for two bookable offences.

Despite the blow, which means he won't be able to make his Tigers debut at Newcastle next Saturday, Cousin is delighted at landing a Premiership ticket after seeing a potential £3m move to Fulham fall through in January.

The striker headed to Ibrox in a £750,000 move from Lens in August 2007, having previously played in France for Martigues, Niort and Lyon.

He scored 11 goals in 28 games for the Gers, but boss Walter Smith was happy to bank decent money for a player who was expected to quit Ibrox with his contract due to expire at the end of the season.

Cousin said: "It has always been my ambition to play in the Premiership. It almost happened when Fulham came in and now it's a reality.

"It was fantastic to finish my time at Rangers by scoring in the Old Firm game. I don't think I'll ever forget that experience.

"I wish Rangers all the best and believe they can win the title. I'd like the fans to know that I always gave my best for them."

Brown said: "Anyone watching the Old Firm game will see that Daniel Cousin is an old-fashioned centre-forward with an eye for the big games.

"I know he got a red card in that game, but I felt that was harsh. I'm ecstatic to have got him."

The arrival of Cousin on a three-year-deal helped to compensate for the failure to land Manchester United starlet Campbell, who proved a wow in East Yorkshire last term, hitting 15 goals as the Tigers roared to promotion.

Hull's club-record £7m offer was rejected by Manchester United – who included Campbell as part of the deal which saw them land Dimitar Berbatov from Spurs at the 11th hour, with the Huddersfield-born ace heading to north London on loan.

Brown added: "The Fraizer Campbell situation became complicated and I have to thank the chairman (Paul Duffen) for sticking to it.

"We were very hopeful of getting Fraizer all the way through.
