Huddersfield Town's 18-year-old goalkeeper Alex Smithies has been put on standby for the forthcoming England under-19s European qualifiers.
The squad travelled to Belfast on Thursday for a two-week period which will see them take on Albania, Northern Ireland and Serbia.

If called into the squad, the young keeper – who already has 10 caps at under-17 level after appearing in the 2007 F
IFA World Cup and one cap for the under-18s – could make his first appearance at under-19 level.

Smithies, a product of the Huddersfield academy, was added to Town's first-team squad ahead of the visit of Luton Town in September 2007 and is seen as a potential successor to Matt Glennon.

He has made one first-team start and one substitute appearance for the Terriers so far this season and is third in line at the Galpharm behind 29-year-old Glennon and Simon Eastwood.

The Huddersfield-born keeper, who has conceded six goals in 104 minutes of first-team football, made his debut as a 76th-minute substitute for Glennon, who was sent off during Town's 4-1 defeat by Southend at Roots Hall last December.

He had a baptism of fire at Elland Road in Town's following game – his first full start for the club ending in a 4-0 defeat to Leeds.

The Terriers had tried to avoid Smithies coming into the team in such a big game, but he was forced to play after Glennon lost his appeal against his dismissal and Town were refused permission to loan an emergency goalkeeper because Smithies was already registered as a professional.

Meanwhile, Town's reserves notched up yet another impressive win on Wednesday, this time against Rotherham.

Mick Doherty's side maintained their 100 per cent league record with a thumping 6-3 thrashing of the Millers' second string. The game was a fitting opener for Town's first match at the Welfare Ground, with a number of players making their case for a place in Stan Ternent's first-team squad.

Star of the show was Keigan Parker who netted a brace, but substitute Tom Denton had a night to remember after scoring his first goal in Town colours.

Danny Broadbent, skipper Robbie Williams and an own goal all contributed to the superb win.

Elsewhere, Town's Malvin Camara had a tough debut for loan club Grimsby.

The Sierra Leone international played all 90 minutes on the right wing, but was powerless to prevent visitors Barnet coming away with a 1-0 win at Blundell Park.

Town's other loanee, Shane Killock, wasn't allowed to play for Harrogate Town against Workington in the FA Cup last weekend because Ternent didn't want the young defender to be cup tied.
