CLASS act Gary Teale has signed for a month at Oakwell, but the Scottish international would be happy to make a permanent switch.
Teale is Simon Davey's sixth summer signing following the permanent captures of Iain Hume, Darren Moore, Mounir El Haimour and Hugo Colace as well as loan signing from Blackburn Rovers, Maceo Rigters.
The wide man has just three weeks and counting
before a scheduled return to Derby, but the experienced 30-year-old has felt a good vibe at Oakwell and would welcome a move up north.
Capped 10 times by his country, Teale has fallen out of Paul Jewell's plans and his lack of regular first-team football cost him his place in this week's Scotland squad for the friendly with Northern Ireland.
Glaswegian Teale still fancies an international future but knows starting roles are a pre-requisite and is eyeing the prospect of regular games at Barnsley.
"I'm just grateful to have the opportunity to get some games in," said Teale.
"I've only had a couple of games and a few training sessions but I've enjoyed my time here and if it progresses into something longer term then I would certainly not be adverse to coming up there.
"Hopefully I can do well and have a good few games before I have to go back and then it's up to both managers what they think. but I'd be delighted to come back."
After learning his trade at Clydebank and Ayr United and following 184 games for Wigan, then Derby boss Billy Davies forked out £600,000 for Teale in January 2007.
The winger was part of the County squad that recorded an all-time Premier points low last term though the 30-year-old spent the second half of the season on loan at Plymouth.
Teale knows first hand from Derby what a bottom-of-the-table team looks like and the good news for Tykes fans is that he sees no similarities at Barnsley.
"From what I have seen, there are a lot of encouraging signs, just in terms of the way the team play their football, and I think one result will give everyone a lift," he said.
"They play some really good football.
"They just need to take their chances. Football is like that in that if you don't it comes back to bite you, but the manager seems quite confident in what he has got.
"If he can just get everyone doing what he is trying to teach them I'm sure they will be okay."
Derby too have yet to set the world alight thus far but Teale also has every confidence in the Rams side under Jewell, who formerly managed Bradford City and Sheffield Wednesday.
"Going up from the Championship came too soon for the club, we were still building," said Teale.
"But as a club, it's a massive club, with a great fan-base and the manager will turn it around. It's just about time.
"There are a lot of new players there and it will take time to get it right, but I'm sure he will."
Teale's whereabouts come the end of the Championship season remain to be seen, but the winger will definitely be a Tykes player when Barnsley host Derby in their next game on Saturday.
The Scot is forbidden from facing his parent club under the terms of his loan deal but can see the clear potential benefits of moving to Oakwell on a permanent basis.
And he knows the move could be the catalyst in re-igniting his international career.
"Obviously I'm disappointed not to be included in the Scotland squad at the minute but I can't have too many complaints as I've not been playing too many games," he said.
"If you are playing at the moment in the Championship or the Premiership you always deserve to be picked or in the squad more than those who are not currently playing first-team football.
"Hopefully I can get back in once I get playing again but first I am focusing on playing club team football."
Teale's next opportunity for that won't come until September 12 at Blackpool once next Saturday's clash with Derby and the international fixtures are out of the way.
In the meantime, he'll have to sit back and watch next Saturday's Barnsley versus Derby game and such is the ambivalence over his future, the Scot doesn't even know who to cheer!
"I'm not allowed to play in that one which is disappointing," said Teale.
"It's obviously disappointing because you want to play in all the games and I would have had a bit of a point to prove.
"I'll be there and I'll just be hoping for a good game of football."
