Pace bowler Deon Kruis ended a run of indifferent form to capture his best Yorkshire figures in the LV County Championship Division One relegation battle with bottom club Surrey at Headingley Carnegie.
Kruis, 34, is probably in his last season with Yorkshire and the South African Kolpak player's five-wicket haul was his first for two years as he finished with 5-47. His previous best figures were 5-59 against Northamptonshire at Headingley in 2005.
Surrey's decision to bat first on a muggy day appeared justified when Scott Newman hit a rash of early boundaries off some loose bowling from Darren Gough but after adding 41 in 12 overs with Stewart Walters, he fell lbw to Tim Bresnan for 29, which included six fours.
Coming on first change, Kruis soon rattled the off-stump of Mark Ramprakash and in the same over, Jon Batty departed to a stunning catch by Richard Pyrah at third slip and Kruis then trapped Usman Afzaal lbw.
Walters attempted to pull Bresnan but was caught by Adam Lyth moving in from the boundary edge for 40.
After tea Matt Nicholson fell lbw to Adil Rashid's and Kruis enjoyed further successes by having Chris Jordan caught low at cover by Rashid and then bowling Matt Spriegel for 29.
It became 167 for nine when Jade Dernbach went lbw to Rashid's quicker ball with Pedro Collins last man out for 21.
Yorkshire used their 10th different opening combination in their last 14 championship matches in Andrew Gale and Chris Taylor, and the pair responded with an unbroken 50 at the close, their side's best first-wicket stand since June of last year.
