It is one of the world’s favourite musicals and has delighted children of all ages for decades. And now Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is enchanting audiences in Leeds.
The musical’s two-month run at the West Yorkshire Playhouse started on December 2 after a sell-out run in the West End in London.
With an eccentric inventor, a villain determined to banish children, the evil child catcher, the adorable Truly Scrumptious, and of course a flying car, Chitty has escapism in spades.
Last month, a fantasmagorical car pulled up outside the theatre before embarking on a tour of Leeds as part of a promotional event.
For each of the show’s main numbers, choreographer Stephen Mear has used a different dance style, so as well as tap, there is also samba, ballet and the odd surprise.
