Gig preview: Chambers at Verve Bar, Leeds

“We met through another all-girl band,” explains Houlihan. “We weren’t into their music, really, we’re into what we’re doing now. We’re really passionate about emotional music but also scary films and it kind of merged into what is going on now with us.”

The pair, who are from Leeds and Hull, released a single called Disappear on the Humberside label Warren Records last year. “It got a lot of attention through BBC Introducing in Hull. We built a relationship with the producer and the DJ and before we knew it our new single was on Radio 1.”

Hostile came out on I’m Not From London Records last week and has already been aired by BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens.

Hostile’s music video was shot at Temple Newsam House and premiered on Clash Magazine’s website.

Explaining their inspirations, Houlihan says: “We’re like sisters – this is why we call our music Sister Doom because it’s got a Joy Division vibe. We’re not a Goth band but it’s a bit dark. We think very alike musically but we also watch a lot of scary films and we get a lot of emotion from those films.”

Hostile was inspired by the violent prison movie Bronson, starring Tom Hardy. “It had a big effect on us so we wrote a song based on that film,” says Houlihan. “The vibe is based around being in a cage, you can hear the banging, which is a guitar, and we work it around a story. The lyrics were based on facts about the real [Charles] Bronson but the feel of the song is about what the film brought and the emotions it has on people.”

The video shoot involved a very early start. “We had to get up at 4am and got there about 6am. We dressed in white and did things to make it look artistic. I had lipstick across my face and we looked like we were in some kind of cult. I had to explain to dog walkers not to worry because we’re not in a cult, we’re doing a music video. It looked like I was a priestess and Ellie was going to be sacrificed. Behind us was a camera man. It all looked out of place. Especially at that time in the morning, it’s not something you’d expect. But it was fun. The whole thing about creating a music video is to do something that’s different.”

Chambers recently played two shows with Allusondrugs and appeared at the Kazoopa music festival in Leeds.

Next up is a headline slot at the Inutero Presents Christmas Party at Verve Bar.

“There’s a lot going on now since we signed to I’m Not From London,” says Houlihan. “We’re releasing our next single, which is called Sister Doom, in February. We’re really pleased with how things are going.”

Plans are afoot to tour Europe in 2017, following the release of their debut album. “It’s one of those things where you’ve got to be quite organic with your plans,” Houlihan recognises.
