Celebrating 50 years since 1967 and the Summer Of Love, ‘Spirit of 67’ is a one-off event that includes live performances, exhibition and mural, gallery talks, a book signing, plus various ‘happenings’ throughout the course of one day in Harrogate.
Guests will be taken on a trip around four venues on Saturday July 22 with highlights including ‘Sgt Pepper at Fifty book signing – Mike McInnerney and Dudley Edwards in conversation’.
McInnerney and Edwards were key players at the heart of the Summer Of Love in Swinging London. Pop artist Edwards lived with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, creating artwork for The Beatles’ London homes and painting McCartney’s ‘Magic Piano’. He was also present during much of the writing and recording of the seminal Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album.
Artist and writer McInnerney was also at the epicentre of Sixties counterculture, at the time Arts Editor for the influential International Times. McInnerney organised a succession of ground-breaking events and ‘happenings’ including the legendary ’14 Hour Technicolour Dream’ – a fund-raising concert for the International Times, referred to as “one of the most infamous acid freak-outs ever to take place in London” and featuring performances from Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd, Pete Townshend and Yoko Ono amongst others.
‘The Spirit Of 67’ reaches its climax with the unveiling of a new mural by leading artist Morgan Howell, featuring super-size reproductions of some of the most acclaimed records released in 1967. This special event will also include live performances by renowned Leeds band The Strawberries and Liverpool singer-songwriter Nick Ellis.
The event has been co-organised by Richard McTague of RedHouse Originals Gallery and Graham Chalmers of the Harrogate Advertiser.
Events take place at 108 Fine Art, RedHouse Originals Gallery, North Bar and The Factory at Poliform North. For further details visit redhouseoriginals.com.
