The Drowning begins when a teenage boy shows up Jodie’s town; she is convinced that he, Daniel, is her long lost son.

However, everything is not as it seems and Jodie goes to great lengths to discover the truth, and the four-part series follows her on a journey to find her missing son by any means necessary – as Jodie drives herself to the edge of reason in search of answers, only her brother Jason supports her.

But where was it all filmed? Here is everything we know so far.

Where was it filmed?

The Drowning was filmed in and around Dublin, though little has been confirmed in terms of more specific locations.

The producers chose the Irish capital city for its “stunning architecture and landscapes”, and have said they were looking for “a Lake District-style location with elements viewers may not have seen before.”

Most of the show was shot on location just before the coronavirus pandemic gripped the world, and as such, production could take place without the need for additional social distancing precautions.

However, some elements of The Drowning’s production did have to be rescheduled as a result of lockdowns and restrictions, though actor Jonas Armstrong – who has also recently appeared in ITV’s The Bay – told the Express it “was a kind of blessing in a way.”

Due to the nature of the show, Armstong had to spend time in freezing cold water, including one scene shot at Lough Dan, a scenic lake in the Wicklow Mountains about 25 miles south of Dublin.

"We were down at Lough Dan, a beautiful expanse of water,” he said. “This was scheduled to be filmed in March but because of lockdown it was moved to August. It was great, but it was cold even for August.”

Executive producer Jason Maza said that Lough Dan was a breathtaking location to film in, though the practical challenges of filming in and around the water were “huge.”

"Poor Jonas had to get in that water and it was absolutely freezing so we were restricted with how much we could be in there,” he said.

"All of those challenges with water work and diving teams and safety boats… it takes a lot of preparation and time and it’s quite slow so we had to try and work speedily but sensibly because the safety of actors and crew getting in and out of the water is paramount.”
