Fashion slideshow: Get the military look

Stand to attention for this season’s military look. Jayne Dawson reveals how to be a style soldier.

Who said fashion trends always have to be impractical? The military look has marched back onto the scene and, with its warm overcoats, handy pockets and stomping boots, it’s perfect for women who want to mix style with comfort.

Banish visions of the Queen’s Guards in their bright red attire – this season is all about a muted camouflage colour palette, accented with black leather or shiny gold hardware if you can’t resist the bling.

From utility chic to ladylike cool, there are various ways to work this on-trend uniform.

****

Traditionally a daytime trend, the likes of Victoria Beckham have given military a glamour injection – as paraded in her autumn/winter collection.

Forget marching, models simply sauntered down the catwalk in sky-high boots and fitted khaki dresses.

Find her soldier homage on the high street in the form of bodycon dresses with figure-flattering panels, belted-in waists and shiny gold button detailing.

Gold is the key accent to transfer your military look to after-dark. Either opt for green pieces sporting gold prints or sequin panels, or dress up your khaki separates with metallic brocade to give your trend-trooper look a luxe spin.

Give the clumpy combat boots a miss and always accessorise with towering heels.

****

Report for duty in a look that says uber-cool cadet.

The perfect uniform for casual days, this look is all about flat shoes, a relaxed silhouette and plenty of attitude.

Sick of staying hidden, camouflage prints have made a striking comeback but should be worn as one statement piece rather than top-to-toe. Think subtle salute, not full-on forces.

You can’t go wrong with a camo jacket for an autumn/winter wardrobe update.

Raid the surplus stores and jazz it up with fresh buttons and some embellishment for your own bespoke brand of army style.

Experiment with contrasting fabrics like denim, lace or even faux fur to give your utility look fresh appeal.

Put your best foot forward in soldier-inspired lace-up ankle boots for added edge.

Fight the fuss with a pared-down take on modern military.

Seeking the perfect overcoat should be your first high street battleground. As it’s your top layer, every outfit will instantly ooze an air of army elegance.

Look for an olive green flowing wool maxi-coat, oversized boyfriend number or fitted jacket with epaulettes, taking into account your height and size.

Utility details like gold buttons, oversized pockets and belted waists will ensure you stand out from the military masses.

To keep things sleek, try teaming your army greens with black leather and crisp white shirts. The combination of dark green and monochrome colours creates instant chic.

Top off your look with shiny knee high boots, long leather gloves and this season’s military accessory of choice (if you dare), a black cap.
