They rose to fame after their bubblegum pop and perky personalities charmed TV audiences.
And now all-singing all-dancing siblings Same Difference are on their way to Leeds to unearth a new generation of pop talent right here in our city.
The duo – brother and sister Sarah and Sean Smith – are running a week-long ‘pop school’ at the Dance Studio Leeds at Mabgate Mills during half-term week from Tuesday, February 18.
Students will spend four days learning about all aspects of being a pop star. They will work on their vocals, choreography and performance skills in a real-life stage setting.
The week will culminate with a dazzling pop concert at the Carriageworks Theatre in Millennium Square in front of a live audience. It’s a venue Same Difference are already familiar with, having appeared in panto there last month. Sean, 28, said: “We are really excited at the prospect of launching Same Difference Pop Academy here in Leeds.
“We have spent the past six years having the most amazing time performing throughout the country and we can’t wait to pass on some of the experience that we have gained.
“We think there is a lot of young talent out there and it’s going to be so exciting for us to help young people nurture their talents and hopefully we will find some stars of the future.”
Sarah, 25, added: “When we were children, we loved to perform but it was very rare for us to be able to do this on a professional stage with the lights flashing and the music booming, so to have the opportunity to give the next generation that chance is just brilliant.
“We are hoping that all the children enjoy the course as much as we have creating it.
“We can’t wait to be back in Leeds swapping our panto costumes for teaching caps!”
The pop school is split into two age categories, seven to 12 and 13 to 16. No previous performing experience is necessary. Students will be taught by Same Difference, as well as professionals from all aspects of the pop industry.
Sean and Sarah hail from Portsmouth. Both left home in their teens to pursue their showbiz dreams. Sean performed on cruise ships, while his sister attended the Italia Conti Academy. Fame beckoned when the siblings entered the fourth season of The X Factor. Mentored by Simon Cowell, the duo won third place.
The Same Difference Pop Academy runs from Tuesday, February 18 to Saturday, February 22.
Timings for the first four days are 9am to 3pm every day.
The pop concert ‘show day’ session will be on Saturday, February 22 from 1pm to 8.30pm. On ‘show day’, all students are requested to be available all day.
