Laughter replaced solemnity in court at Harrogate yesterday when magistrates found themselves adjudicating in the case of a chicken taken by a man named Fox.
They heard how James Anthony Fox had been spotted acting suspiciously in a farmyard at Tancred Hall, at Whixley, near Knaresborough, at 7.30pm on August 14.
Prosecutor Zoe Simpson said Jonathan Cox, who kept rare breeds of chicken on the holding believed 22-year-old Fox was concealing something in his clothing.
And when Mr Cox lifted Fox's sweatshirt out popped a £25 Polish Shamron chicken.
Fox, of Thorpe Trees, Thorpe Green Lane, Thorpe Underwood, near York, admitted theft. He told the court he had nothing to say.
Struggling to keep straight faces, magistrates, who were told the chicken was no worse for being up Fox's jumper, imposed a fine of £50 together with £45 costs and a £15 victims' surcharge.
And as Fox walked from the courtroom, the bench, court officials and lawyers burst into laughter.
