THE DRUMMER from a chart-topping rock band Embrace is opening a new bar and music venue in Wakefield city centre.
Mike Heaton will open The Hop of Westgate with Ossett Brewery.

Work is under way to transform the 19th century Vanguard House, on Bank Street, into a three-floor venue.

The project will also include a fish and chip shop and will create 20 new jobs.

Mr Heaton said: "We will pick the best bands to play, including local bands, and get some bands who are on tour to pop in."

Mr Heaton, who already mentors young bands for councils in North Yorkshire, Bradford and Leeds, is hoping to do the same in Wakefield.

He said: "I am in talks with Wakefield Council about becoming a mentor here and we will also be able to run some kind of music school from the Hop. I feel too many bars are fashion bars and this is something that is more traditional and timeless."

Downstairs in the venue will feature a traditional real ale pub with a stage area and windows that open onto a private courtyard. The second floor will be a music venue.

The Hop is set to open on with an invitation-only night on Thursday, December 11, with a one-off gig by Mr Heaton before opening to the public on Friday, December 12.
