Featherstone shop asks for licence back

A CORNER shop where drugs were allegedly peddled over the counter and alcohol sold to underage youngsters could be given its booze licence back this week.
Council officials will decide on a bid by the owners of the Featherstone Convenience Store, on Green Lane, to get their licence to sell alcohol back after they gave it up in May.
A police raid on the shop in March this year discovered substances thought to be cannabis, ecstasy and heroin.
Local councillors and residents were jubilant after the meeting in May when the owners decided to hand their licence over rather than face having it taken away.
At that meeting, PC Dave Malik, of West Yorkshire Police, said: "This is one of the most outrageous and disgusting examples of running a licensed premises we have seen in not just Wakefield, but West Yorkshire."
Now residents will be anxiously awaiting the outcome of the meeting this Thursday.
The YEP understands the meeting will not take into account the results of the police raid but will instead look purely at licensing issues.
If approved the new licence would allow the owners to sell alcohol from 8am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 11.30pm on Sundays.
Refused
Featherstone Independent councillor Kay Binnersley said: "I'll be at the meeting speaking against the application along with others from the local community.
"There are very strong feelings not just in the area around the shop but across the whole of Featherstone that this application should be refused.
"People were very pleased when the shop gave up it's licence at the previous meeting and it would be unfair if it was to get it back."
Representatives from the police will also be speaking at the meeting.
A 20-year-old man has been questioned about drugs recovered from the store and is still on bail pending further enquiries.
The owners of the store were not charged with any offences.
The man was arrested when police raided the store acting on a tip-off from a member of the public.
