For kids enjoying the summer holidays, the prospect of a room packed full of toys might sound too good to resist.
But if mum and dad tag along to Wakefield Museum's fantastic new exhibition, youngsters are going to have to battle hard to get much of a look in.

That's because the museum's Toy Stories exhibit is full to bursting with some of the greatest retro playthings ever created.

Vintage Star Wars figures, classic Transformers and a pretty pink My Little Pony are just a few of the vast collection of toys guaranteed to spark a trip down Memory Lane.

The more modern exhibits take their places next to a stunning Edwardian doll's house and Victorian Noah's ark with 100 beautifully carved and painted animals.

Exhibition curator John Whittaker told the YEP: "There really is something here that everyone will remember.

"There's toys here that I played with in my childhood and it will be the same for everyone who comes.

"Toys are universal, it's something that we can all relate to."

Mr Whittaker said the toys in the collection have been brought together from the museum's stock and through generous donations from locals.

He said: "The exhibition is divided into section including rainy day games, things that go, and toys that have come through movies and TV.

"Our idea was to make this an exhibition that could be enjoyed by everyone from grandparents to young children."

Mr Whittaker and designer Adam Simmonite were putting the finishing touches on the exhibition earlier this week, but let the YEP in for a sneak preview.

It will be open to the public tomorrow and runs until November 1.

Coun Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council's Cabinet Member responsible for culture said: "Toys are one of the most important parts of our childhood, something we all fondly remember.

"There are lots of exhibits in this display that will strike a chord with children, parents and grandparents alike.

"There is a huge range of toys on display from our collections as well as treasured toys borrowed from the public."

Wakefield Museum, on Wood Street, next to Wakefield Town Hall., is open 10.30am – 4.30pm Monday to Saturday and 2 – 4.30pm on Sundays. Admission is free and the exhibition is fully accessible to wheelchair users.
