Scores of Wakefield Wildcats fans gathered at Wakefield Town Hall today as they vowed to pile the pressure for a new stadium onto council chiefs.
Around 100 fans braved the wet weather to gather on the steps of Wakefield Town Hall ahead of a meeting of the council's cabinet, which rubber-stamped the decision not to press ahead with plans for a new community stadium at Thornes Park.

The club were to be the anchor tenants of the stadium.

But a feasibility study and business plan for the project, which also included other sports facilities, budgeted the scheme at £58m- a figure council bosses today said they could not afford.

As part of the protest, fans unveiled a tombstone bearing the legend mourning the death of sport in Wakefield and were joined by club mascot Daddy Cool.

At the meeting, council chiefs pledged to continue working with the club to find an alternative.
