THOUSANDS flocked to historic Kirkstall Abbey for one of Leeds' most popular annual events on Saturday.
The Kirkstall Festival, now in its 28th year, provided a wide range of attractions for everyone from toddlers to pensioners with music acts, stalls, funfair rides and displays.
John Liversedge, chairman of Kirkstall Valley Community Association, which runs the event said: "It really is a community festival and we try and get as many people involved from the area as possible.
"The festival has grown from strength to strength since it started in 1980 and we hope everyone had a good time.
"There are always a few minor glitches at an event of this size, but overall it was excellent and once again we had another fine day with the weather."
Inspired
The theme of Saturday's event was 'Festival of Colours' which inspired a poster competition involving seven local primary schools. The overall winner from the 600 entrants was nine-year-old Serena Dunleavy, of Sacred Heart Primary, whose design was featured on the programme.
The free event kicked off with a parade on nearby roads that finished in the grounds of the Abbey, where attractions included a main stage, youth stage run by students from Intake High in Bramley, and a tea dance marquee for more elderly festival-goers.
Other attractions included historical re-enactments, bungee jumps, a climbing and a humorous dog show.
There was also a special church service in the Abbey Nave led by the Very Rev Keith Jukes, Dean of Ripon Cathedral.
