Historic moments at Moortown

GOLFERS who gathered to celebrate the centenary of one of the sport's most historic holes got that sinking feeling when Tin Lizzie didn't quite make it to the party.
The stunning Model T Ford car – which were affectionately called Tin Lizzies – was to form the centrepiece of the event, but was left stranded on the back of a truck which had sunk into the course on it's way to the celebration.
Luckily Moortown Golf Club members didn't let that dampen their spirits as they took to the famous Gibraltar Hole decked out in costumes from the 1900s.
Lord Mayor of Leeds Frank Robinson was among the guests who came to turn back the clock and remember the day when the hole was founded in 1908.
The Harrogate Road club was founded a year later and once played host to the Ryder Cup in 1929.
Former Club President and well known Yorkshire businessman Victor Watson, organiser of the event, said: "This is one of the most famous holes in England – and if it's famous in England, it's famous all over the world.
"It turned out that the first Model T was made on October 1, 1908 so it was a double centenary celebration, which is why we got the Model T here.
"Moortown Golf Club is steeped in golfing history which we're extremely proud of and it's wonderful everyone has come here today to celebrate that."
Car retailer Benfield Ford provided the vintage Model T.
And members of the club got the chance to try their luck at getting a hole-in-one on the par-three Gibraltar Hole with a new car for anyone who managed the feat, which proved just out of reach.
The hole – the 10th on the course – was given its name because its sloping, plateau green is built on top of a rock. It is considered by many golfing professionals one of the best holes in England. The course itself was designed by one of the game's greatest ever designers, Dr Alister MacKenzie.
All proceeds from the day will be donated to Martin House Hospice for children.
