Posh Spice wannabe Chanelle Hayes wants to follow in the footsteps of Prince Harry's girlfriend and become a student in Leeds.

The Prince's South African squeeze, Chelsy Davy, is halfway through a degree in the city while living in the Hyde Park area.

Chanelle, from Wakefield, has revealed that despite pursuing a career in both modelling and pop she still has academic aspirations.

The 20-year-old was due to be sitting A-levels in Spanish and English Language at New College in Pontefract before she left to go on Big Brother 8.

And despite the fact she'd still have to take her exams she told the YEP: "I still plan to start at university – preferably Leeds – next year."

Chanelle revealed her plans after she strutted into HMV Leeds on Monday to promote her first single, I Want It.

Boasting a brunette bob, dark denim jeans and a jewel-encrusted black vest top, she giggled and hugged fans.

Richard Jackson, 16, of Temple Newsam, Leeds, was ecstatic when she tried on his sunglasses.

He said: "She's an icon, down to earth and I love her style.

"I am a bit of a wannabe Katie Price, so it's great to see her determination to follow in the footsteps of Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham, and it's worked."

Andrew Denman, 36, and James Pearson, 40, agreed the new single – played throughout her signing session – sounded like pop princess Britney Spears.

Chanelle said she did not actually write the song, adding: "It's Britneyesque. All her singles on her comeback album were so catchy. The idea was to do something that I liked."

She said she might try something classical in future.

"I've been trained in music since I was six. Now I have gained my confidence I would like to do more. But whether it will be classical with violins or pop and R&B I don't know."

The music video that accompanies the single has been banned from children's television.

"I said from the start I thought it was too sexy. I would like to wear clothes next time. I felt so bloated because we'd had a Chinese meal the night before."

When not promoting music, making TV programmes or launching fragrance, Chanelle lives at home with her parents in Middlestown, near Wakefield.

She recently got a puppy – Crumpet, a foxy coloured Pomeranian – who is possibly more designer than her owner.

"I got her a business jacket and tracksuit, Louis Vuitton dog bags, Gucci designer dog bowls and a Gucci dog collar," confessed Chanelle.

So will we be seeing more of Chanelle now that she has a puppy to care for?

"I come home every weekend. I'm always out shopping so people are probably bored with me and probably want me to go back to London."
