You can take Tom Sykes out of Huddersfield, but you can't take Huddersfield out of Tom Sykes – even with a worldwide tour on the agenda as part of a dream move to World Superbikes.
Huddersfield born and bred, Sykes is regarded as one of Britain's hottest young motorsport talents, following a highly impressive 2008.

In only his second season in British Superbikes, the 23-year-old finished fourth in the rider's championship an
d then made a huge impression in two wildcard appearances in the world version.

World Superbikes is now Sykes' destiny – he was snapped up by the Yamaha Motor Italia team in August and the new season kicks-off in Australia next March.

The likes of Qatar, the USA and San Marino will follow but wherever he is Sykes' roots will not be doubted due to his deep Yorkshire accent.

The racer admits he is often the butt of much leg pulling but the new World Superbikes rider is proud of his background and becoming the next big thing out of Huddersfield since two-time British champion James Whitham.

Whitham is now a strong supporter in the media of Sykes' cause and the 23-year-old is honoured to be representing his home city on the global stage.

"I was born in Huddersfield and I've lived in Huddersfield all my life," said Sykes. "I've got my own house in the area and I've not really strayed that far.

"We had another good rider from Huddersfield before, in James Whitham. He's now turned his hand to commentating and, fair play, he always talks me up as he sees I'm another lad from Huddersfield.

"He always gives me a good mention to try and promote the area and just show that we have got sports stuff happening in this area. It's good for me.

"The fans also like that I'm from Yorkshire, though everyone takes the mick out of my accent as it's quite a broad Yorkshire accent and I tend to be on the receiving end of a lot of practical jokes in the paddock!

"All in all it's a good laugh, but I am very proud that I'm from Yorkshire and I'm still based here."

Sykes' home may get a little lonely in 2009 with trips to 13 countries on the cards through the 2009 World Superbikes calendar.

Sykes will tour with his girlfriend, Amie, and granddad, Peter Brook, who has been the 23-year-old's mentor from a young age.

The rider thinks he can cause a shock or two next year but is also fully intent on taking in the scenery.

"It's fantastic and I can't get over the fact I'm going to be touring the world," said Sykes. "I'll need to tie in a little bit of sightseeing with my racing and training.
