KATIE CHARNOCK, the former Yorkshire player from Leeds, had a special announcement to make at the Yorkshire Championships at South Leeds Tennis Centre.
Katie, who is 40, is set to give birth to twins – a boy and a girl – in January.

Tennis is very much a part of the family. Katie's mother, Joyce, played at Wimbledon in the Roger Taylor era.

Before she got married Katie was better known as Kat
ie Howden and has had long links withChapel Allerton Tennis club.

The Charnock's had been hoping for a double celebration at the championships.

Katie already has a 13-year-old daughter Holly who won through to the girls' under-14 final, but she was beaten 7-5 6-4 by Georgia Craven, who plays at the Carnegie Tennis Centre in Beckett Park, Leeds.

Meanwhile, Yorkshire president, Liz Wilson from Ben Rhydding, near Ilkley, was again a keen supporter of the championships.

Since the mid-eighties Wilson has been Yorkshire Lawn Tennis Association president and also representing the Leeds District as a Yorkshire LTA councillor. This is the second time she has served as president. Her earlier term covered 1999 and 2000.

In 2007 she was awarded the Meritorious Service Award by the Lawn Tennis Association for services to the sport.

With its six indoor courts and range of outdoor courts Wilson said the South Leeds Centre provided an ideal venue for the county championships.
She praised tournament referee 27-year-old Tim Pattle from Hull and his string of helpers who had assured a smooth running event which attracted 500 entries.

Elsewhere, Ripon clinched promotion to Division One in the Harrogate and District Tennis League, joining Bedale who were promoted a fortnight ago.

However, the championship title in Division One is yet to be determined.
Ripon, who won the Division Two title in 2005, secured promotion when they defeated Ben Rhydding 8.5-0.5.

RESULT – Ripon names first: Simon Sterne and Ellie Makin beat Mark Hagel and Morag Wilkinson 6-2; beat Peter Harrison and Penny Crisfield 6-3 6-1. James Rowbottom and Helen Worthington beat Harrison and Crisfield 7-5; Steve Grandison and Hannah Rogers beat Hagel and Wilkinson 6-0; halved with Harrison and Crisfield 6-6.
