Garforth suffered an early setback in their bid to retain the Kall-Kwik first division championship when they were beaten 2-1 by Harrogate side Harlow.
It was the start of Garforth's second season in the Harrogate-based league after a runaway success in their debut season.

Garforth finished last season with 216 points while nearest rivals Collingham posted 198. Chapel Allerton were third on 175.

This season Garforth went into their first match with a problem for team skipper Alex Tate.

Harlow Vocalink 2 Garforth 1 (Harlow names first): Richard Leondard beat Anton Green 9-3 9-1 4-9 9-6; Seth King beat Neil Thackery 9-1 3-9 9-3 5-9 9-0; Nigel Chambers lost to Alex Tate 2-9 8-10 5-9.

Former England international squash player Simon Parke enjoyed a return to his roots when he took up a guest-of-honour appearance at a leading North Yorkshire school.

Parke, whose squash talents were first spotted while playing at Pontefract by the world famous Jonah Barrington, said it was an honour to take up the invitation at Harrogate's St Aidan's lower school sports presentation evening.

Assistant head John Wood said it was time to highlight a minority sport and felt the ideal person was Parke, who played at Harrogate Squash Club as he climbed the ladder to national and international fame.
Brothers

Parke, now 36, is the full-time coaching professional at Heaton Squash Club in Bradford.

Among the audience at St Aidan's were two Harrogate brothers, Ross and Jordan MacDonald, who will soon be representing the school in their newly-formed squash team.

Ross, 14, and 12-year-old Jordan will be members of the side competing in the Schools' Squash Championship.
