KYLE BRASSINGTON completed a hat-trick of Yorkshire men's tennis titles at South Leeds Tennis centre – but he still needs another eight to catch his coach Gary Henderson who retired on a record-breaking 11 successes.
It took just under an hour for Brassington, from Ilkley, to complete a 6-2 6-1 victory over 16-year-old Joshua Gledden who plays at Abbeydale, Sheffield, where his father John is managing director.
Brassington, nicknamed Brasso, made a rusty start
to his defence of the title at South Leeds, putting it down to a fortnight's rest and holiday in Egypt.
But once the Brassington machine fired up his young rival was made to scamper around the court.
For a while in the opening set both players had their erratic moments.
But once Brassington had the first set under his belt young Gledden found points hard to come by.
Brassington was only seven when he started playing at Ilkley Tennis Club.
His move through the ranks to a professional tennis player has been well-supported by his family, with help from his mother Sue who is a teacher and his father David, a builder, while his grandmother Kate has also been a generous benefactor.
Afterwards, Brassington said he was delighted to have claimed his third title on the trot and pledged that he would again be supporting the county event next season.
But for now he is looking ahead to more immediate events. On Saturday, he starts two weeks' tournament play at Nottingham in a £15,000 Futures' Tournament, followed by three weeks in Pakistan and he will be aiming to chip away at his world ranking which is currently 1,100 – down from a recent 1,187.
For his part, Gledden at least had the consolation of lifting the under-18s title after defeating Thongsbridge's Dan Sinclair in straight sets – 6-4, 6-4.
Meanwhile in the women's competition, Chris Paraskos, head tennis coach at Harrogate Academy, had plenty to get excited about.
His star pupil at the event was Nicole Peterson from Rastrick who took the girls' under-18s title by defeating Leeds Carnegie player Hetty Alton 6-4 6-2 in the final.
It's two years since Paraskos spotted the potential of Peterson who can make the strings zing with her power play. She is already working to reduce her starter world ranking of 1,480 and is now world 1,240.
Petersen replaced 18-year-old Annabel Gledden from Sheffield as the holder of the title.
Gledden was not there to continue her run having decided not to continue her tennis career and instead resuming her education at Sheffield Girls' High School.
