Young guns edged out in final

Crossgates C.C. fielded a young side for the Betty Chadderton Trophy final against Walton with eight juniors and only three adults and one of them was only 20.
Crossgates 'A' won the toss and elected to bat. The youngsters made a fine start putting on 53 for the first wicket. After being dropped at the end of the first over Mathew Hatherly went on to make 45, and an excellent 43 by Zarak Khan saw Crossgates to a total of 166. Phil Allum 3-28 and Shaun Colley 3-20 were the pick of Walton's bowlers.
Walton were full of more experienced players got of to dreadful start losing opener Richard Hhnatt in the first over of the bowling of Khan with 0 on the scoreboard. They then lost two more wickets in the opening overs and Crossgates looked at this point to be on their way to victory.
But Adil Mahmood 31 and Waltons Captain Phillip Allum 41 made a dramatic recovery and brought Walton right back into the game. The match was interrupted briefly by rain and a new target was set for Walton of 136 from
35 Overs.
Crossgates youngsters started picking the batsmen off again and the match was evenly balanced going into the last few overs , Robert Whiteley's 32 though helped the more experienced Walton to Victory with only nine balls to spare.
The pick of the Crossgates bowling was Lahiru Dissanayaka 3-25, Naeem Aheer 3-39 and Zarak Khan 2-22.
But everyone agreed that the youngsters showed that Crossgates could be the club everyone is watching and talking about for years to come.
And a final word about the day, The Sri Lankan contingency certainly added to the occasion with the drums and tambourines and singing I'm sure Church Fenton's ground has never seen anything like it, it was louder than Headingley some say.
