Yorkshire CCC's 2010 fixtures: It's a hectic start for us, says Moxon

YORKSHIRE are facing a busy start to the 2010 season – with four County Championship fixtures in the opening month.

The Tykes begin in the four-day format against Warwickshire at Edgbaston on Friday, April 9 and also play Somerset at Headingley Carnegie, Kent at Canterbury and Durham in Leeds before the end of a month which also includes a 40-over clash with Essex at Chelmsford.

"I just hope we get some good weather in April," was Yorkshire director of professional cricket Martyn Moxon's initial reaction.

"It is a pretty hectic schedule. Starting on April 9 is a concern and we have just got to hope we get some decent weather in pre-season and in April.

"We have got four games, so that is a quarter of the season in April."

Moxon said he has "not got a problem" with the prospect of opening away to Warwickshire - and he is relishing the revamped 40-over competition, which culminates with a Lord's final in September. The Twenty20 tournament next year will see Yorkshire play 16 group matches, half of them at home.

"The 40-over league is a bit different," Moxon said. "It will be interesting with the different power plays, there's 16 overs of power plays, which is a large chunk of the match.

"There will be a bit of strategy involved, when you take the second and third power plays. It will be a challenging tournament and obviously the Twenty20 is extended as well, so there's plenty to look forward to."

Yorkshire's players began their preparations at the start of this month. Moxon said: "They are doing fitness work, by and large, right through to Christmas.

"After that we will introduce some cricket alongside the fitness work.

"We are already well into the planning process and now we have got the fixtures we've got to put together travel arrangements, hotels, second XI fixtures – it is a busy time of year for us."

Moxon's men will be half way through their LV County Championship campaign by the start of June.

Their eighth match is the Roses showdown at Headingley, with the return being staged at Old Trafford on June 28.

Yorkshire will be Holland's debut opponents in the 40-over competition, at Headingley, on May 15.

They face Matthew Hoggard's new county Leicestershire for the first time in a T20 fixture at Grace Road on June 20.

Yorkshire will spend two weeks at Scarborough's North Marine Road.

They play Northamptonshire there in the 40-over competition on May 2, followed by the championship fixture against Essex, which begins two days later.

Scarborough Festival week, in August, includes a four day showdown with Hampshire and a one-day game against Middlesex.
