Wortley boys net a hat-trick of titles
JUNE was a month to remember for Wortley FC as the club were presented with silverware for last season's hat-trick of Leeds & District League titles.
Wortley enjoyed a sensational 2008-09 campaign, winning the under-17s boys premiership as well as the under-16s and under-15s championships.
Their under-17s boys also won the Leeds & District League Cup to make it a double-winning season.
Roy Kearsley, Wortley general secretary, was thrilled with last season's success.
He said: "This is a great accolade for our three teams who compete in the Leeds & District Junior League to win the league titles in the same season."
Meanwhile, Ossett's footballing youngsters are celebrating following a large grant awarded by the Football Foundation, the UK's largest sports charity.
The cash bonanza of 6,617 will allow Ossett Albion Junior Football Club to expand their girls section, giving youngsters from Ossett, Dewsbury, Horbury and surrounding areas the opportunity to sample all the fun and excitement that football offers.
Paul Thorogood, chief executive of the Football Foundation, said: "We warmly congratulate Ossett Albion and the West Riding County FA for their hard work and dedication in securing this award.
"Sport is playing a central role in helping people to stay fit, strengthen communities and promote responsibility amongst young people.
"It is thanks to the funding from our partners the Premier League, the FA and Government that the Football Foundation exists to support this type of excellent project in Ossett."
Brenda Kerr, girls development officer at Ossett Albion JFC, added: "We are absolutely delighted that the Football Foundation has awarded Ossett Albion this grant.
"It will enable us to implement our ambitious three-year plan for girls football in the local area.
"Our aim is to create a fun environment for girls to play football and ultimately develop a player pathway from under-8s to our ladies team, who play in the Premier Division of the North East Regional League.
"Ossett Albion JFC are an FA Charter Standard club, which means that we offer a safe, well-organised environment for local children of all ages and abilities to learn to play and enjoy the beautiful game of football."
Elsewhere, Nidd United Lions, based in Scotton, are recruiting players for their under-13s boys side.
Established five years ago and competing in the Harrogate and District League, the team is run by FA qualified coaches who are committed to player development.
An FA Charter Standard club, Nidd United have teams in all age groups from under-12s through to under-16s level, and pre-season training is about to start.
