The cash bonanza will allow the club to launch a series of projects in conjunction with the primary schools in west Leeds to encourage Reception and Year 1 pupils to become actively involved in football.

The project will create a new U-7s mixed football team for the next three years and will also support the recruitment and development of parents and volunteers, who will attend courses to gain qualifications to become qualified FA-Level football coaches or referees which will be required to support the newly developed teams.

The Football Foundation is dedicated to revitalising the grass roots of the game, constructing modern football facilities, developing football as a force for social cohesion and as a vehicle for education in communities throughout the country.

Funded by the Premier League, The Football Association and the Government, the Football Foundation is the nation's largest sports charity with a 40m budget going straight into the heart of football.

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation told Wortley Today: "We warmly congratulate Wortley FC and the West Riding County FA for their hard work and dedication in securing this award.

"Sport is playing a central role in helping people to stay fit, strengthen communities and promote responsibility amongst young people. I am delighted that the Football Foundation is supporting this project in the Wortley area of Leeds with over 6,400 of investment towards football development."

Roy Kearsley, general secretary at Wortley Football Club, said: "With the much-needed help of the Football Foundation the club can continue to develop its Junior Boys and Girls section and give young children a taste of being part of a well respected and established community football club and at the same time experience what grassroots football is all about."

He added: "Our community support is focused on young people, working with partners to signpost children to the club and giving them the best possible opportunity to have a positive experience in life."
