Wanted: A strong referee
BY PETER SMITH WAKEFIELD Trinity Wildcats boss Shane McNally has called for strong refereeing in Sunday's Belle Vue clash with Bradford Bulls.
McNally is desperate to avoid a repeat of the game against Bradford earlier in the season at Odsal, when Wildcats looked poised to pull off a major shock until losing their way after prop Michael Korkidas was sin-binned.
Bulls' long-serving hooker James Lowes recently avoided disciplinary action following allegations he abused the referee during Bradford's Tetley's Super League defeat by Wigan Warriors.
McNally said: "Last time we played Bradford we had Robert Connolly as referee. He is Bradford's resident ref.
"Korkidas got sin-binned for dissent when he slammed the ball down in disgust but later in the game the touch judge ruled Bradford had lost the ball and Lowes picked it up and kicked it at him, but nothing was done.
"We have got Connolly again on Sunday, so I hope he is strong again and he controls the game, rather than James Lowes."
McNally believes leading sides like Bradford are often given the benefit of the doubt by referees in games against sides at the other end of the table – and he alleged Lowes is given too much leniency by match officials.
"It is disgraceful he is allowed to do it and get away with it," he said. "I am sure if any of my players spoke to referees the way he does, they would not stay on the field. He really intimidates them."
