Temple AFC U-12s enjoy first ever clean sheet

Temple AFC notched up their first ever clean sheet and another win at the weekend.

Wortley B U-12s 0

Temple AFC U-12s 1

Date: Sunday, November 25

Competition: Garforth Junior Football League, U12 Division 4

With key defensive players 'rested' the manager decided upon a three strong defensive line favouring more players in midfield.

Therefore the onus was on defenders to perfom well and that they did superbly, contributing in style to Temple's first ever clean-sheet.

On a steeply sloping pitch Temple applied pressure from the start but, despite almost the whole first half being played around the Wortley penalty area, Temple shots on target amounted to nil before half-time.

Efforts off-target were few and far between too, though Tom Gordon, Matty Hayward and Declan Isaac all came close from long range. All credit to a Wortley defence who closed down quickly and denied the

Temple forwards any space.

Disappointingly, Temple's midfield and strikers preferred individual dribbling efforts which repeatedly ended in lost possession rather than the quick passing which has featured in training recently. Half time 0-0 and not a tremendous amount to cheer about.

After the break Wortley put in a more determined effort and began to press the Temple defence still without troubling the keeper. The defence held well thanks to terrific perfomances from Calum Drysdale, Alex Lambourne and central defender Lewis Caterill.

In the only serious attack on either goal a Matty Hayward effort was brilliantly saved by the Wortley keeper. With only five minutes to go and the game heading for a draw, Declan Isaac struck a superb volley from 25 yards which rocketted into the Wortley net.

That goal has to be favourite for 'goal of the season' and was matched by the team celebration which followed.

For the final five minutes the game burst into life and both teams put on an exciting display which had been lacking throughout the game. Temple's defence came under serious pressure and all were relieved at the final whistle. Final score 1-0.

A tight game which neither team deserved to lose but Temple have earned nine points from their last three games and are grateful for those points even though the overall performance was not their best.

Commiserations to Wortley who showed terrific spirit throughout.
