Temple AFC U-12s 3

(Thornes won 3-2 on penalties after extra time)

Date: Sunday 7th October 2007

Competition: WRCFA Under 12's County Cup

A Jekyll & Hyde performance from Temple saw them concede 3 first-half goals without a fight, then claw their way back to 3 - 3 and force an extra-time and penalty shootout thriller.

In a disasterous first half Temple never got started. Defence in

disarray, midfield missing and strikers slow and unimaginative.

Classy Charles Rice League outfit, Thornes Juniors Colts, took full advantage of Temple's poor start and punished the many errors with 3 well taken goals. The only lights in the Temple camp were winger Declan Isaac who tried hard without any backing, and Ashley Walker with

occasional flashes of trickery. Half-time 3 - 0 and Temple looking

thoroughly beaten.

Three minutes after the break, from a corner on the left and scrambled confusion in the Thornes' box, Ryan (Tank) Wooffitt stabbed home his first goal of the season and what looked like being a simple

consolation. But Temple weren't having that. Suddenly switched on,

Temple repeatedly put Thornes under pressure and were rewarded 10 minutes later with the goal of the season. From 5 yards outside the box, Tom Gordon picked up possesion and fired a rocket shot over the packed goalmouth high into the roof of the net.

Fifteen minutes later, again from a scrambled goalmouth clearance the ball dropped to ace defender Ryan McGregor who blasted through the pack for the equalising goal.

Temple kept up the pressure until full time and the score at 3-3.

In extra time Temple continued to push for the winner and had several good chances saved. All credit to Thornes who held firm until the end

of extra time to force a penalty shootout.

Even the penalty shootout went right to the last shot all equal.

Declan Isaac, now acting as keeper, brilliantly saved the first Thornes penalty and Thornes missed another. Tom Gordon and Matty Hayward scored for Temple but three missed penalties meant Temple were eventually out of the competition.

Temple received special applause from both sets of spectators, well deserved for an exciting second-half display. Shame it was a different team that had played the first-half.

Man of the Match was a difficult decision with such poor first-half efforts and every player contributing to a brilliant second-half.

Eventually Ryan (Tank) Wooffitt won the award, his goal being the switch that turned the team on.
