SUE SMITH: The fun of the fair and some footie
Hey guys. I am now back home from a rather blustery Blackpool.
We had a fun-packed week consisting of some really hard training, an afternoon on the pleasure beach and, oh yes, a World Cup qualifier against Malta. Starting with the training, we had fitness testing whilst we were away, we did various high intensity sessions with a focus on attacking and shooting which I loved and lots of meetings about what is the next focus for England ladies.
Our focus is quite simple, to finish top of our group and qualify for the World Cup. In our group are Malta, Spain, Austria and then our next opponents Turkey. It is a tough but winnable group.
We went into our game against Malta knowing that Spain had well and truly beaten them a month earlier.
However, sometimes this can prove to be a tough task. Complacency can come into play and when an international team is beaten so heavily they will only come for one thing and that is to defend and spoil our game and that's exactly what Malta did. We managed to win the game 8-0 but it could have been 20. After the game our manager Hope Powell was obviously delighted that we had three points but a bit disappointed that we were not as clinical in front of goal as we should have been.
I didn't have my shooting boots on either and should have got on the scoresheet. So my focus for training this week is shooting for sure!!
I was made up that my little team-mate and room-mate Jess Clarke bagged a brace in the game. It is well deserved. She works so hard and it is all starting to pay off for her. It was also really nice to have lots of friends and family at the game being so close to home, so my ticket form was full for once.
Okay, now on to the important stuff. We had an afternoon off on Saturday before the game so as I had my car we decided to go for a drive to the Pleasure Beach. The girls from London couldn't believe Blackpool when they first arrived and it wasn't their usual five-star luxury hotel and the area was, should we say, a little bit dilapidated which caused a few moans.
All of us northern lasses loved it. The place was really tacky and cheesy but had great character and as said by mummy Smith: "The air is better here than anywhere" – and she isn't wrong.
However, by the end of the trip all the girls loved it. They were going home with big teddies that they had won, fake poo, Blackpool rock and rude shaped sweets, and of course memories of going on the Big One! I love the fair but am scared of heights but I thought you can't go to Blackpool and not go on the tallest ride in Europe but I did scream all the way round and have a rather attractive picture as proof.
All in all, it was a fun week and Blackpool is definitely a place to visit if only for a night out – I am sure you will have fun. As you can see I now have a new job as a travel tour operator for Blackpool.
PS: Don't tell Hope we did all that on Saturday afternoon as I don't think she knows!
