Squash: James Willstrop column FEB 9

Now that former England skipper John Terry has joined the club of high-profile sports stars to have been found out, it begs the question who will be next?

It appears that in this day and age it is decidedly difficult to hide anything – and it will only get worse.

Few people have sympathy for the likes of mega-bucks Terry and previously Tiger Woods, who must also be having a miserable time of it, because they are revered worldwide, heroes to many and who get to play sport for a living whilst earning ludicrous sums of money.

Why should they be given an inch? They are living in what can only resemble a dream world to the working man. Quite right, quite right..

Now Terry certainly is no hero to me, yet this is the only instance in which I feel slightly sorry for the victim.

Only slightly. Everybody has had a say and as we eat dinner with friends or socialise in the pub we find ourselves discussing a situation like Terry's because we have heard about it on the news.

the other striking thing is that we talk about it as if we know those concerned – like we know every detail about the whole episode.

It is intensely depressing that many of us revel in scandal concerning others and with the invention of the gossip column our collective curiosity in the 21st century has risen to grotesque levels.

Is it really our business? And isn't it slightly hypocritical and distasteful that many of us, who have murky private lives in one way or another, give comments about Woods and Terry?

Each one of us wears a mask and I wonder if some of the press commenting on Terry's predicament are always good boys and girls themselves.

They give opinions with such righteousness and confidence that you would think their personal records would be unblemished – I'm sure they are not.

Or maybe I am wrong and it is everyone's business; or at least maybe, because these people are so rich and famous, we feel we have the right to think and say as we please, even if it isn't true.
