Gildersome Spur U-15s 2
Colton Juniors U-15s 7
Date: Sunday, October 14
Competition: Leeds & District
On a grey autumnal Sunday afternoon Colton visited Gildersome on the southern outskirts of Leeds.
A group of more than 30 spectators stood in anticipation of what appeared to be a mid table encounter. Both Colton and Gildersome had played the same teams in the early stages of the season with similar results coming from those games, thus it appeared there would be very little between the teams.
The game got off to a good start with Colton having the better of the early exchanges. Due to injuries to a number of key players Colton decided to play with five in midfield and one up front. A midfield trio of George Walker, Ryan White & Dalton Fotherby having the support of the flying wingers of James Green and Josh Gould.
The first attempt on goal came in the 5 minute and it was Colton pressing hard with a shot past the Gildersome goal. Neat interchanges in midfield resulted in James Hazelgrave adding the first with a deft shot past the keeper on 12 minutes. 1-0 to Colton and the visitors were ahead. Gildersome then pressed hard and a quick move through the middle resulted in an equaliser on 14 minutes. 1 – 1 and the expectation of an equal battle appeared to be the case.
As the tussles in midfield continued it was the commanding presence of Sam Parker in the Colton centre of defence that delivered the next goal. A neat right foot shot past the Gildersome keeper and 2 -1 to Colton. As the first half began to come to an end it was the Colton defence of Adam Hamblet, Sam Bateman, Sam Rudd, Harrison Brazier & Sam Parker that quashed all Gildersome attempts. Fantastic rear guard action and the half finished 2 – 1 to Colton.
The second half began well for Colton as James Hazelgrave added a third via a neat dribble and finish. 3 -1 to Colton and James Hazelgrave was heading for a 4th consecutive hat trick and it came in the 50th minute when James Green's neat dribble and pass ended up on James Hazelgrave's right boot and 4 – 1.
Colton were running the show now and as Rob 'the cat' Hamblet and Nige the trainer strolled up and down the touch line offering words of wisdom to the referee, you could see Colton grow in stature. Even the injured duo of Ben Craven and Ronan Whittle, who'd suffered late injuries before the game, were taking onboard the advice and supporting their team mates.
Mid way through the second half and the excellent Sam Parker headed yet another defensive clearance which found it's way up front and out for a corner. The perfect corner from Josh Gould left James Hazelgrave with next to nothing to do and it ended up in the back of the net. 5 -1. Gildersome then made an instant response and added a second goal of their own a score line of 5 -2.
In the closing stages of the game a 5th goal for James Hazelgrave and a neat strike by George Walker resulted in a rout of a score. Colton had put Gildersome to the sword and were beginning to show an ominous steel throughout the team that will begin to strike fear across the rest of the 2nd Division.
Next weekend's free week comes at a time when Colton have shifted up a gear. A bye in the Leeds & District Cup leaves Colton waiting two weeks before they take on Bramley at home on October 28.
