Season ends on a high for North Leeds CC 2nd team
A fine century by North Leeds C.C. 2nd's opening bastman Tim Hales helped the team rack up their highest league score of the season against Guiseley. Click here for match report.
Knowing we'd secured our top flight status last weekend, Saturday's game was going to be a more relaxed affair than games in recent weeks.
Skipper Mark Singleton finally won a toss and we batted, hoping to rattle up a big score on the usual flat track produced at The North.
Tim Hales and George Wales opened up again, and immediately Tim set about the Guiseley attack. Runs came easily to both batsmen, the 50 partnership achieved inside 10 overs and their first 100 stand inside 17 overs.
Both batsmen were hitting regular boundaries but it was Tim who reached 50 first and went on to make a belligerent 101. George again batted with ability beyond his years, making a fine 63.
The first wicket fell with the score on 148 just before the midway point in our innings. Steve West came and departed quickly and cheaply bringing Barry Singleton to the crease. He also took a liking to the bowling and smashed a quick fire 38 before trying one heave too many. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals but the run rate remained at nearly a run a ball. Mark Singleton also scored a brisk 33, before our final wicket fell with the score on 292 - our highest league score of the season.
Guiseley's reply mirrored our innings until the last handful of overs. Glen Taylor also scored a magnificent century but our score was just out of reach and we recorded a deserved winning draw. Barry Singleton was once again the pick of our attack, taking 4 wickets.
This was a great game of cricket played in the spirit a game of cricket should be played in. We look forward to welcoming Guiseley and all the 1st Division teams to The Homestead in 2008.
* Congratulations to North Leeds C.C 3rd team captain Peter Maver whose side finished as runners up in the 3rd Team league this season. The majority of the side is selected from the juniors at the club, which bodes well for the future of North Leeds with many of them hoping to push for places in the 2nd team next year.
