Wakefield Wildcats ‘building from a good base’ - Agar

It is early days, but coach Richard Agar is confident Wakefield Trinity Wildcats are heading in the right direction.

New-look Wildcats – including 15 recruits – began their Stobart Super League season with a 32-14 win at Widnes Vikings last weekend and Agar is keen to see his players build on that at home to Hull KR tomorrow.

“We are still new as a team,” Agar stressed. “Last week we were really happy to get the win and really happy with certain aspects of our performance, but we still think there’s plenty of improvement in our game.

“The grit, determination, enthusiasm and toughness – some of the un-coachables – we have got them in bucket loads.

“There’s still things that we can improve on team wise, but I think that we’ve given ourselves a lot to build on. We’ve got a good base to take ourselves forward.”

Agar is expecting a battle against a Rovers team who, without star men Ben Galea and Blake Green, led against Leeds Rhinos last weekend, before fading late on.

“Their forwards have got some power and a real hunger about them and they are getting off their line quickly,” Agar observed.

“They are a dangerous side and will be really tough opposition. They will see this as a chance to get off the mark this season, so it shapes up to be a good game.”

Wildcats’ management are confident that tomorrow’s clash will go ahead, despite the freezing weather.

Agar said: “We are keen to play. We don’t have a game next weekend and at this stage I’d rather keep playing than go a couple of weeks without a game.”

Wildcats will be without prop Kyle Amor who suffered a broken wrist at Widnes last weekend.

That could mean a Super League debut for forward Kyle Trout, though Frankie Mariano and Andy Ellis are also vying to take Amor’s place in the final 17.

Rovers coach Craig Sandercock will select from the players on duty last weekend, plus Jason Netherton and Sam Latus.

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats from: Mathers, Fox, Collis, Mellars, Cockayne, John, Smith, Wilkes, Aiton, Southern, Lauitiiti, Kirmond, Washbrook, Wood, Raleigh, Johnson, Trout, Mariano, Ellis.

Hull KR from: McDonnell, Hall, Welham, Webster, D Hodgson, Murrell, Dobson, Clinton, Withers, Paea, Horne, Mika, Lovegrove, Taylor, Wheeldon, J Hodgson, Cox, Netherton, Latus.

Referee: Robert Hicks (Oldham).

Kick-off: Tomorrow, 3.30pm.
