the play-offs are back on Wakefield Trinity Wildcats’ agenda, but coach James Webster admits his team have to beat visiting Huddersfield tomorrow.
Wildcats reignited their top-eight hopes with a 40-26 win at Warrington six days ago, a week after they had been crushed 40-6 away to Catalan Dragons.
Webster’s men began First Utility Super League round 23 just two points outside the play-offs zone, but he reckons they will be too far off the pace if they don’t win tomorrow.
“The play-offs weren’t on my radar after the Catalans game,” Webster conceded. “Obviously mathematically now we are in with a chance, but I would definitely say we need to win this week. With Hull KR playing Widnes this weekend it would be too hard for us if we lost. We’d have to win four out of four and someone else would have to lose, so we need to win this week if the play-offs is possible.”
This season has been littered with shock results and Webster added: “It is an extremely tight competition, especially among the top-six teams.
“There’s a couple of competitions in one, but we have a chance of winning this week if we play well.
“Not many people gave us a chance at Warrington. Huddersfield are a good team, a big, strong, fast team, so we need to play really well to win.
“We are prepared and we will go out and do our best.”
Wildcats’ side will be selected from the 17 who beat Warrington last week, plus Paul Sykes and Max Jowitt.
Shaun Lunt replaces ex-Wildcat Kyle Wood in Giants’ squad and Anthony Mullally and Jake Connor are also in contention.
