Starlet Bates set to make his debut
THORNHILL TROJANS believe that they have unearthed a future star in 16-year-old Andrew Bates.
The teenager is poised to make his open-age debut in tomorrow's National Conference summer league clash with visitors Eastmoor Dragons (2.30pm).
Trojans spokesman Andrew Byram said: "Andrew has come through the junior ranks and is seen as an exceptional talent.
"He signed open age forms for the club last Saturday prior to the game at Milford and the significance of the day was that it was also his 16th birthday.
"Although Andrew wasn't selected to play he did get involved by acting as a touch judge.
"If he is selected to play tomorrow he could be the youngest ever player to play open-age rugby for Thornhill."
Meanwhile, Trojans' annual meeting will take place next Wednesday (8pm).
Representatives from Kirklees Council will attend and a new chairman is to be appointed.
Richard Turner, who has been acting-chairman since Alan Oldfield stepped down midway through last season, has said he will not continue after the meeting.
Both teams will rely on youth when Oulton Raiders host Milford Marlins in the Conference summer league tomorrow (2.30pm).
Prop Ryan Angus will continue his comeback for Marlins, who are top of the table despite having fielded a side with an average age of just 20.
Loose-forward James Barker and second-row Joe Ramsden both face a fitness test after missing last week's win over Thornhill.
Hooker Matt Brickley is missing with an ankle injury.
