OLIVER WILKES: Top-four spot's a realistic goal for the Wildcats
IT'S not often you win a game with a kick off the touchline after the final hooter, so the match against Harlequins last weekend was one everyone at Wakefield will remember for a long time.
It has been evident all season – and we spoke about it during the week –that Harlequins are a good arm-wrestle side, they complete, complete, complete, turn you round, force an error and try and capitalise.
We knew we had to do the same.
We pride ourselves on being able to grind wins out and we came up trumps at the end of the day.
It's a big relief – and a lot more exciting – when you win at the end of the game, rather than knowing you've got it won in the first half.
I think it's certainly a lot better for the fans.
The ground was in uproar, it was a great atmosphere to be involved in and I think it was great for the club.
When Scott Grix scored the equalising try and the hooter went, I remember thinking to myself that one point was better than none.
I wasn't really backing Danny Brough to kick the goal, but it typifies him as a bloke.
Nothing fazes him, there could have been a million people watching and he'd still have knocked it over.
He certainly had his kicking boots on on Sunday and long may it continue.
The big thing for us is that last week's win took us to 20 points, which is what we finished with last year.
With nine games left, that's a good psychological boost for the players and hopefully that will stand us in good stead for the rest of the year.
The top-four is a realistic goal for us.
We have had our ups and downs – on and off the field this year – but we have gelled together well as a group, we had a great win at the weekend and hopefully we can take that into what is a very important game at Huddersfield on Sunday.
They beat us 54-6 at our ground in May, which – fortunately for me – was the first game I have missed in two-and-a-half years.
They are always big games against Huddersfield.
In 2007 they turned Wakefield over four times and last year we beat them twice, so there's a bit of spice to it.
They are on the front foot with the result last time, but fingers crossed we can go there and set the record straight. They have got a new coach this year, they have recruited really well and they are a good side, another arm-wrestle side who like to grind out wins.
They do the simple things right, so it's another big challenge.
The last couple of games I have been playing out of position in the second-row. A few years ago I wouldn't have thought that would be an unfamiliar role for me, but I have developed into a front-rower and that's where I feel most comfortable now.
I don't mind though, I just want to be playing.
I would play at full-back if our coach, John Kear, wanted me to.
Huddersfield's another of my old clubs, so I'd love to go there and put one on them.
That would be another big plus in what has been an enjoyable season for me personally, so far.
