Northern Rail Cup preview: Keighley Cougars v Batley Bulldogs

It will be ex-Wakefield players against ex-Wakefield coach when Batley Bulldogs begin their Northern Rail Cup campaign at Keighley Cougars tomorrow.

Weather permitting, John Kear’s first competitive game as Batley boss will see him go up against his former Wakefield captain Jason Demetriou – now Cougars’ player-coach – plus Michael Korkidas, Semi Tadulala and Paul March, who all played under him at Belle Vue.

“They are a good team,” said Kear, whose side won at Cougar Park in pre-season. “They have a team that will trouble anybody, so we are expecting a really tough encounter.”

Bulldogs won the Northern Rail Cup two years ago and Kear said: “I’ve been looking through the records to see what you need to qualify for the quarter-finals.

“It will be a good start, an interesting start and I’m looking forward to seeing some people who I know very well.”

Batley Bulldogs (at Keighley) from: Palfrey, Campbell, Mills, Potts, Maun, Daley Williams, Walton, Henderson, Black, Moore, Walmsley, Smith, Potter, Menzies, Hirst, Lythe, Mennell, Bretherton, Walker, Scott.

Referee: Gareth Hewer (Whitehaven).

Kick-off: Tomorrow, 2pm.
