Northern Rail Cup match report: Keighley Cougars v Batley Bulldogs

Batley Bulldogs came back to beat the Keighley Cougars to win a classic at Cougar Park.

Batley’s Tom Henderson was the first to score as he re-gathered a spilled ball by Jason Walton to go in untouched.

Keighley hit back straight from the kick-off as Batley knocked on and from the next set, half-back pairing Sam Obst and Danny Jones combined to put Jason Demetriou over. Jones converted to give the Cougars the lead.

Jones then orchestrated the home side’s second as his neat ball got Richie Barnett on the scoresheet, though he failed to add the difficult extras.

Despite great territorial advantage, Keighley failed to capitalise fully, with Demetriou’s neat grubber – which Barnett almost pounced on – the closest they came to extending their lead.

It was the Cougars who opened the scoring in the second half, as hooker James Feather scooted over, Danny Jones converting.

But the Batley comeback then began as Ben Black showed his class. He first put Gareth Potts through a hole, who, in turn, played Johnny Walker in for a score. The last 10 minutes then saw the Bulldogs get on a roll which couldn’t be stopped.

A break away started by Black eventually saw him set up Danny Maun to touch down.

Applegarth then completed the comeback as he latched onto Black’s ball to level things up. Gareth Moore slotted over the pressure kick to give the Bulldogs the lead.

Barnett then fumbled a bomb from the boot of Black and Gareth Potts touched down in the corner to end the contest.
