Ian Millward to take reins at Leigh Centurions

Former Wigan and St Helens coach Ian Millward is to return to England next season after agreeing a three-year contract with Co-operative Championship club Leigh Centurions.

Millward, 48, who enjoyed a successful stint at Leigh in 1999, is to quit his role as assistant coach with Canberra Raiders to succeed Paul Rowley at the Sports Village in 2010.

"Ian took Leigh from a lowly-placed club to the top four before being released to take over at St Helens in the 2000 season," said chairman Arthur Thomas.

"He created history at Saints, winning two premierships, two Challenge Cups and a World Club Challenge in a six-year term.

"I would like to thank Paul Rowley for his services during the interim period and he will continue at the club as a coach working alongside Ian."

Millward's St Helens career ended in controversial fashion four years ago when he was sacked for gross misconduct - his offences included three incidences of foul and abusive language - and within a fortnight was installed at arch rivals Wigan.

But he lasted less than 12 months in the JJB Stadium hot seat after the Warriors made a disastrous start to the 2006 season and, after a brief spell as advisor with Leigh, returned to Australia, initially with North Queensland Cowboys.

Millward said: "Leigh gave me a start back in 1999 and I will endeavour to repay the club and its supporters with success in the coming seasons.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Leigh and in Super League and the other reason behind my decision was to be closer to my three children, who still live in England and to allow my wife Marion to live closer to her parents.

"I am also appreciative of Canberra Raiders decision to release me from my current contract at the end of the 2009 season to allow me to take up the Leigh appointment."
