Batley Bulldogs fend off the taxman

Batley Bulldogs have fended off moves by the taxman at London’s High Court to wind the club up.

Mr Registrar Nicholls formally dismissed a winding-up petition brought by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs against the club’s parent company, Batley Football Club Ltd, on request by HMRC’s lawyers.

The move almost certainly means the club has paid its undisclosed tax debt in full.

Had the company been compulsorily wound up, this would have effectively handed over the club’s affairs to an Official Receiver.

His job would then have been to do his best to ensure that debts were paid off by selling any assets available and then bringing business to a close.

Meanwhile, Batley Bulldogs coach John Kear was far from satisfied with his side’s latest Northern Rail Cup win.

Batley made it two wins from two with a 50-16 home drubbing of London Skolars two days ago.

Kear said: “The first half against Skolars was excellent, but I was disappointed with the second half – we let our standards slip and our intensity dropped.”
