LEEDS RHINOS STAND-OFF Danny McGuire offered no excuses after Saturday’s play-offs defeat by Catalan Dragons.

“It’s disappointing,” McGuire said of the 24-20 loss. “You have got to give Catalan credit, they kept going to the end and we were a bit sloppy.

“We didn’t play well and defensively we were a bit off. They made too many breaks. It is disappointing and frustrating, but we got beaten by the better team on the day and sometimes you’ve got to hold your hands up.”

Leeds led three times, at 6-0, 14-6 and 20-18, but were unable to put daylight between themselves and the French raiders.

“I always felt, without playing well, the game was well within our grasp,” McGuire reflected.

“At times we shot ourselves in the foot defensively.

“I think we were pretty poor and that’s something we’ve been pretty strong at this year.

“We’ve been strong defensively, but maybe there was a lack of energy.

“It has been a similar story the last few weeks and it caught up to us.”

Leeds didn’t win a game after their Tetley’s Challenge Cup victory a month ago. Asked if that took too much out of them, McGuire said: “I’m not sure.

“It is easy to make excuses and we don’t want to do that. We just weren’t good enough for the last few weeks.

“Potentially we might have put a lot of effort into that. Everybody knows we were desperate to win that this year and it might have taken a lot out of us, but we are professional players and we’re paid to turn up every week. We’ve just not been good enough.”
